Baltimore Film Club Movie Screening – February “Love or Heartbreak” Series

Every Thursday in February, we are watching movies that explore the complexity of romance. Our second film is an allegory set in Cameroon, where a young couple—Ngando and Ndomé—who are in love but are prevented by Ndomé’s family from getting married because Ngando cannot afford the customary dowry. When Ndomé becomes pregnant, a marriage with Ngando’s older uncle, whose past three marriages failed to produce children, is quickly arranged. The film is a thinly veiled polemic on the dowry system, the country’s colonial past, and political corruption.
